Woman As Healer by Jeanne Achterberg

Before the Christian church gained control of Western Europe, a pagan society existed there in which women were equal with men, and where the most of the healers were women. This book tells the story of these women healers, and the church's brutal attempts to wipe out their influence which culminated in the Witch Craze in which millions of women were burned as witches, often for no greater crime than being a natural healer or a midwife. Gruesome at times, but compeling reading, and a story which desperately needs to be told in our society, if we are going to overcome the trauma which divides men and women, and the church and women.
