In Hellenistic cities, the gymnasium was the place to go, not just to work out, but also to be noticed so you could get on in society. The problem for Jews wishing to make it into the upper eschalons was that all training at the gymnasiums was done in the nude, and they stood out because they were circumcised. This led them to devise an operation called an "epispasm" which disguised the effects of circumcision.
