The exile in Babylon was a time when the Jews reflected on what they had done wrong. Through this process, and the writing down of the Bible, they gained a sense of their nationhood, their culture, and the worth of their civilization that they had never fully had before. Some important prophets emerged during this time, but there had, of course, been prophets before the exile.
