Although renowned for his wisdom, Solomon's political wisdom was not great, as he created the seeds of a divided Israel by discriminating against the northern tribes and favoring Judah. Soon after he died, the north rebelled and became the separate kingdom of Israel, distinct from Judah. This marked the beginning of a decline which ended in the destruction of both kingdoms and the exile in Babylon. According to the book of 1 Kings, Solomon had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines, and his wives led him astray.
