The Jews, in time, gave circumcision a far greater religious significance than the Canaanites ever did, nevertheless, they did originally adopt this practice from the Canaanites. The same is true of their burnt offerings: the Communion Sacrifice, where the meat was eaten and the fat was offered to God in the fire, and the "Holocaust", where the whole animal other than its skin was burnt. And again, Ancient Hebrew can be shown to have evolved from the Canaanite language. These two cultures were initially very close.
