Although the Bible implies that the Ancient Israelites under Joshua destroyed Canaan, archaeology shows it was in fact destroyed by marauders from the north who went on to attack Egypt. Only Egypt's armies were strong enough to stop them, and force them back. One of the marauding tribes, called the Peleset by the Egyptians, and the Philistines in the Bible, settled along the coast of Canaan and became the mortal enemies of Ancient Israel. Since the word "Philistine" now means "uncultured" it is ironic that the Ancient Philistines were actually excellent artists, and made fine pottery.
